Flexible, ultra-rapid charging is helping SP Energy Networks electrify critical fleets while keeping its operations resilient.

PowerUp keeps the power flowing for SP Energy Networks

Keeping the lights on and the power flowing 24/7 is SP Energy Networks’ mission. To help achieve this, the utility operator has installed TUAL’s PowerUp Chargers at three of its critical UK locations.

The ultra-deployable chargers are now operational in Middlewich, Liverpool and Cambuslang near Glasgow to support the electrification of high-utilisation, operationally critical fleet vehicles. These are locations where conventional charging could be constrained by site use, lease arrangements or wider infrastructure and development considerations.

Following a successful pilot at Middlewich in Cheshire, TUAL’s PowerUp Charger provides the perfect solution for the three sites, with rapid-deployment, ultra-rapid DC charging leading to minimal disruption, reduced civil engineering requirements, and the flexibility to be redeployed quickly if site requirements change.

SP Energy Networks’ Phil Jones said: “Our teams work around the clock to keep power flowing and the lights on 365 days a year, so it’s vital that our electric fleet is ready to go at a moment’s notice.

“The trial in Middlewich showed that TUAL’s PowerUp Charger can be deployed quickly, deliver the DC charging capability we need, and support operational resilience thanks to the built-in battery – all with the added bonus of the flexibility to be easily relocated if needed to meet our site needs. It was a no-brainer to build on the success of our trial by rolling out this innovative technology to these three key locations.”

TUAL’s approach supports resilience. The PowerUp Charger stores energy on site, providing additional operational continuity in the event of power disruption. In these conditions, the units deployed for SP Energy Networks will provide approximately 600 miles of stored driving energy - supporting the availability of operational vehicles at sites connected to nationally-critical infrastructure.

The rollout builds on TUAL’s wider work supporting mission-critical and high-utilisation fleets across constrained environments. The company’s technology has been developed for demanding applications where vehicle uptime, driver confidence and charging reliability are essential – from utilities and emergency response, to logistics, commercial vehicles, ports, defence and other hard-to-charge missions.

TUAL’s PowerUp Charger combines integrated battery energy storage with high-power DC charging, drawing and storing energy from available grid supply before delivering ultra-rapid charging to vehicles when required.

The system makes it faster and easier to deploy ultra-rapid DC charging capability, ultimately supporting the expansion of electric vehicle fleets, without compromising operational resilience - essential for energy network operators and other critical responders.
